Dom
St. Peter (St. Peter’s Cathedral).
When approaching
Regensburg one can already see what is perhaps the most
important Gothic building in Bavaria, the St.Peter's Cathedral. It is a
massive brick structure situated on the site of a former Roman military
camp. The cathedral was built between 1250 and 1525. The towers,
however, were only added between 1859 and 1869, during the Romantic
movement that swept through Europe in the 19th century. The architect
Ludwig took French examples to design the cathedral for Regensburg. Some
highlights : the stained-glass windows of the choir (early 14th century)
and the museum with the treasures of the church.
Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge) :
This 310 m long bridge
over the Danube is Germany’s oldest surviving stone bridge (built
1135-1146). it is a fine example of medieval engineering. From here a
nice panoramic view over the city can be had.
Reichstagsmuseum in the Old Town Hall.
At "Rathausplatz"
stands the old 15th century town hall. The tower of the building is
older (13th century). Inside the town hall is a superbly decorated room
which served as the seat of the "immerwährender Reichstag” ("everlasting Imperial
Diet”), the first parliament of the Holy Roman Empire between 1663 and
1806. The colours of the benches in the room where an indication of who
had to sit where. Next to the building is a newer town hall which dates
from the end of the 17th century..
Schloss (castle) of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis
and the former St Emmeram abbey.
This complex is
situated at the south end of the city. The buildings of the former abbey
were expanded in the
19th
century and incorporated into the present Schloss complex, which is still inhabited and
open to the public. Some highlights : the Gothic cloister (12th-14th
century), the library with magnificent frescos by Cosmas Damian Asam and
the burial chapel. The complex also houses a branch of the Bavarian
State Museum.
Kepler-Gedächtnishaus (The
memorial house of Kepler) :
Memorial to the
astronomer Johannes Kepler, who died in Regensburg in 1630
(original instruments and models).
