In Munich, many activities take place outdoors. Even in winter, the
inner city’s beer gardens are open, provided there is no risk of the
pints of beer freezing up. As to clothing, one never leaves home without
wearing a coat or a sweater. Munich’s continental climate means that
it can get very cold between December and February. Snowfall is still
possible at the start of May, but then it will soon melt. Summer
temperatures normally reach a maximum of 30° Celsius. Weather changes
sometimes go hand in hand with great differences in temperature.
A widely known phenomenon in the Alps is the Föhn wind. This occurs
when air masses dropping down behind the mountain range as fall winds,
heat up more than they had cooled off while rising. For Munich this
means: a hot southerly fall wind, a magnificent panoramic view, as well
as headaches for the weather-sensitive, circulatory disorders, and
despondency.
