U-Bahn 3 or 6: Universität station

The ‘LMU’ is today one of Germany’s most prestigious universities. Founded at Ingolstadt in 1472 by Duke Ludwig the Wealthy, it was moved first to Landshut, then finally to Munich in 1826 by King Ludwig I. Architect Friedrich von Gärtner drew up the plans for the complex. At first he proposed that obelisks should grace the rectangular space on either side of Ludwigstrasse. But later on, the decision went in favour of two fountains, which bear a distinct resemblance to their models on the Vatican’s St.Peter’s Square.
