Dortmund
has numerous medieval churches. Some of the most important ones are
listed hereunder.
The
Petrikirche
(Peter's Church) : a Gothic 14-th century hall church with a splendid
high altar (from 1521) made by the Flemish master Gilles. Also
noteworthy is the former dominican
Propsteikirche,
with its exquisite late-Gothic main altar. Closeby are two other
churches : the Reinoldkirche
and the Marienkirche.
The former is dedicated to
Saint Reinold, the patron saint of Dortmund
and has an early-Gothic 13th century main body and a late-Gothic 15th
century presbytery. Inside the church are many Gothic sculptures and
decorations. The Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) was build in the 12th
century in Romanesque style. It posseses a beautiful Madonna statue from
around 1230.
Lovers of art can visit the
Museum für Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte
(museum for art and cultural history). The main focus of the museum is
on interiors from differents periods. There are also some examples of
Secessionist design by Joseph Maria Olbrich.
