Cinemas

Berlin is Picture City. The Berlinale (tel 25 92 00, www.berlinale.de ) is one of the world’s major film festivals, on a par with Cannes and Venice. It takes place in February in the new festival centre on Potsdamer Platz.

This is Berlin’s biggest cinema complex. CinemaxX (tel. 0 1805-24 63 62 99) has 19 theatres and accomodates 3,500 filmgoers. A few cinemas are reserved for the classics and films in their original versions. The nearby Imax-theatre (tel. 0 1805-46 29 22 55) shows spectacular nature films in a round dome and in the Cine Star at the Sony Center you can watch original versions.

Cinemas on Ku’damm and Tauentzienstrasse are often used for premières. The largest theatre is Zoo Palast, Hardenbergstrasse 29a, Charlottenburg, tel. 25 41 47 77.

Berlin’s attractiveness as a city for film buffs is mainly based on the countless small cinemas that present their own idiosyncratic programmes.
