Site of a settlement as early as the 8th century. The fortress
was erected between 1560 and 1594 for the protection of Berlin.
The Julius Tower guarded the imperial war booty in 1870-71. Served
as a warehouse for poison gas during the Second World War. Today
the citadel is a much-loved destination when you want to find out
more about the history of Berlin.
In the arsenal of the citadel, the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum
(museum for city history) documents life in Spandau. In the
bastions, ateliers and exhibition areas from artists and craftsmen
are located. The arches of the citadel form one of the largest
hibernation places for bats. During the season expositions about
bats are being organized (✆36
75 00 61).
During the summer there is a theatre on the Freilichtbühne
at the citadel and the kitchen of restaurant Zitadellenschänke
takes you to the Middle Ages.
