Pleasure mansion of Sophie Charlotte, wife of the Elector
Frederic III (King Frederic I). Erected in 1695 by J.A. Nering.
Inhabited by several Prussian kings, and extended and renovated by
major architects. Knobelsdorff built the New Wing for Frederic II.
C.G. Langhans added the theatre in 1791. He also erected the
Belvedere in the park. K.F.Schinkel designed the mausoleum for
Queen Louise (1776-1810) and the Schinkel pavilion. Heavily
damaged during the war, the castle was reconstructed in 1945.
Tour of the royal apartments, the Eichengalerie and the castle
chapel. The Galerie der Romantik and the Museum für
Vor- und Frühgeschichte (Museum of Prehistory) are also
housed here. The park is partly laid out in French style and
partly as a landscaped garden.
At the ‘Ehrenhof’ (in front of the castle) Andreas Schlüter’s
horseman statue ‘The great Elector’ found a worthy spot.
