This splendid Gemäldegalerie (Picture Gallery) was
inaugurated in 1998. It ended the cultural forum in Tiergarten and
became an impressive cultural crowd puller close to the new
entertainment complex on Potsdamer Platz. It houses more than a
1,000 masterpieces of European painting from the 13th to the 18th
century. The pictures show up splendidly in the kindred exhibition
space of this new complex by Hilmer/Sattler. Today Berlin’s
Gemäldegalerie belongs one again to the collection of the world’s
greatest museums.
The cultural entity around St.Mattäuskirche (19th century) is
completed by the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Applied
Art), Kupferstichkabinett (a collection of drawings and
prints), Kunstbibliothek (Art Library), Neue
Nationalgalerie, the Library of the State as well as the Philharmonie,
chamber music hall and museum of musical instruments.
