Hackescher Markt
S-Bahn-station Hackescher Markt
The environment around the Hackesche Höfe is very popular amongst
tourists and at the same time it is a very beloved area for going
out at night. In the arcades under the S-Bahn-station and in the
Rosenthaler Straße, many cafes and restaurants have settled. You
should definitely have a look at the courtyards here. Some of them
have been thoroughly renovated (like the Rosenhöfe), others are still
in a somewhat deplorable state, like the Haus Schwarzenberg, which
documents themes of the Nazism, just like the Museum
Blindenwerkstatt Otto Weidt and the Anne Frank Centrum. In
his workplace for the blind, Otto Weidt provided work and shelter for
Jewish laborers. This way they could escape the Holocaust.
The Neue Schönhauser Straße, the Sophien-, the Gips, the Große
Hamburger Straße and the Oranienburger Straße are lively streets as
well. During the summer, the Monbijoupark with its beach bar, deck
chairs and the Hexenkessel Hoftheater are very popular.
