Berlin
is trendy! Every year more and more people come to visit the capital of
Germany. Of course, it has been one of the most fascinating main cities
of Europe and a magnet for everybody who is looking for extraordinary
things during a city trip. If you are looking for the exciting night
life, numerous shopping possibilities, wild parties or a romantic
dinner, or if you want to enjoy a cultural event or a sports
manifestation of top quality, Berlin has it all and more. In 2006 the
city is all about the WorldCup, because from the opening ceremony
‘Gala Berlin’ on June 7 until the finals on July 9, all eyes, all
over the world, will be on Berlin.
But
even without soccer, Berlin remains an inexhaustible source of beautiful
moments. First, there is the walk (or the comfortable tour), through the
everchanging city with its vivid present and its stirring past. From the
Prussian kings to the time of the National Socialism and the bifurcation
that lasted forty years, to the new Berlin, the history of the city you
will find mostly in its architecture. Those architectural witnesses go
from Schinkel’s classic buildings to the architectural frontpieces of
I.M. Pei and Daniel Libeskind. The differences between East and West are
hardly visible anymore, and the leftovers from the Wall have become a
touristic attraction of its own.
The most important memorial in Berlin is the monument in remembrance of
the Jews that were killed in Europe. The field with the steles, a design
by Peter Eisenman, provides an accent from an urban development point of
view, with a deeper meaning between the Brandenburger Tor and the
futuristic buildings at the Potsdamer Platz.
From
the classic sights to the almost suburban charm in Kiez, from the world
culture in the museums and on stage to the creative forces in fashion
and media, from the culinary diversity to the hidden beauty of nature,
there is so much to discover. You better plan beforehand where the trip
is going to lead this time. Because if you decide to visit Berlin, in
most cases you will come back at least once, to do all those things that
you couldn’t do the first time because there wasn’t enough time, or to
experience something new in this city, that knows how to quickly adjust
itself.
