The history of Baden-Baden and the
Württemberg-Baden district generally, starts thousands of years ago
Around 200,000 years ago, it is assumed, lived the man whose skull was
found near Steinheim on the Murr. The past of which we speak encompasses
a half million years. Those are unimaginable time periods. Man of this
early time nourished himself from what Nature offered him; he collected
fruits and vegetables, and hunted animals that he could overcome. With
the end of the Ice Age 10,000 years ago, the large animal herds
disappeared as the basis for livelihood for the Early Stone Age hunter.
The Middle Stone Age began. Hunting for smaller animals, trapping birds
and gathering fruits and vegetables required broader roving about by
small groups. They changed their lodging place seasonally from mountain
caves to the shores of Lake Feder. According to the testimony of Julius
Caesar the name "Celts" is a collective name for numerous tribal groups.
They lived since the first millennium B.C. in west-central Europe. The
correlation of these tribes was evident in a common language. Numerous
names of towns, most names of bodies of water, and many designations of
mountains in this one-time Celtic core territory remind us of that up to
today. So, for example, the place names Kandern and Istein, the names of
the rivers Neckar and Rems, the mountain names Belchen and Blauen have
their origins in the Celtic language.
In 1619 the Bohemians deposed their Catholic king from the House of
Habsburg, and offered the crown to a Protestant prince, the Prince
Elector Friedrich V of the Palatinate. Most of his councillors and
several friendly princes advised him against accepting. But Friedrich
opted for the Bohemian crown. With Elisabeth, his young English wife, he
got into the coach and drove from Heidelberg to Prague. In November
1619, he was crowned there. Almost exactly a year later, in November
1620, he lost the battle of White Mountain by Prague to Tilly, the
commander of the Catholic League. He fled clear through Germany to the
Netherlands In the state of Baden-Württemberg were united the states of
Baden, Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern, newly created
after the end of the war in 1945. Based on the Referendum of 9 December
1951 ("Southwest State Referendum"), the new federal state of
Baden-Württemberg was constituted on 25 April 1952.
Mark Twain, writing of his visit to Baden-Baden wrote "I fully believe I
left my rheumatism there". The waters Mr. Twain talks about are those of
"Friedrichsbad", also know as the old baths. Built from 1869 to 1877 at
the request of Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden.
The Spielbank, the oldest gambling casino in Germany was designed more
than 140 years ago in the style of those in an elegant French chateau.
Through the area Reformation Act of the 1970's Baden-Baden's size
increased with the acquisition of the town of Steinbach and the villages
of Ebersteinburg, Fremersberg, Gallenbach, Haueneberstein, Nägelsfürst,
