The district Tiergarten is Germany's political focus. A few steps away from Brandenburger Tor sits Bundestag parliament in the recasted Reichstag's building. The glass dome, designed by Sir Norman Foster, fills the former dusky Wilhelminian building with daylight and attracts thousands of visitors each day. Nearby, the new government buildings form the "Band des Bundes" ("Federal Bond") between East and West. It is concluded impressively by the new Bundeskanzleramt (chancellor's office). In the south of the Tiergarten park, the old Diplomatenviertel is being revived: numerous embassies have been built or renovated. The worth-seeing embassy buildings of Mexico, India and Scandinavia are already finished. The Head of State, the Bundespräsident (federal president) resides in Schloss Bellevue whose white, coolish architecture corresponds with the black, elliptic new building of the Presidential office.
